Logo Significance
SMS stands for Saint Mary’s Seminary of Cleveland, Ohio. The flag contains three colors, blue, yellow and red. The blue wave commemorates the first parish of the Diocese of Cleveland, St. Mary of the Lake, and honors the present dedication of the seminary. The choice to put the waves at a downward slant is to connect Cleveland and Youngstown along the flow of the Cuyahoga River. The yellow and red sections are derived from the Arms of the Diocese of Cleveland and are symbolic of the seminary as a diocesan theologate. The yellow is also a nod to the founder of the seminary, Louis Amadeus Rappe, first Bishop of Cleveland who bore a gold cross on his arms. Historical research has shown the diocesan seminary was, for a very short time, dedicated to St. Francis de Sales, the colors of whose Arms were blue, gold, and red. The Arms of Saint Mary Seminary incorporate these colors as well. The ermine spots in the white section are derived from the Arms of the Diocese of Cleveland and are symbolic of the seminary as a diocesan theologate.
